Ahtisaari supported the entry into the European Union, and, in a 1994 referendum, 56 percent of Finnish voters were in favour of accession. Negotiated, along with Viktor Chernomyrdin, the end of fighting in Kosovo in 1999 directed by Slobodan Milo evi?. Often encountered resistance from the Finnish Parliament, which preferred a more cautious foreign policy. It was succeeded by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tarja Halonen, who became the first woman President of Finlandia Ahtisaari was the Special Envoy of the United Nations in the process of Kosovo status negotiations, aimed at resolving the long-running conflict in the territory that declared independence from Serbia in 2008. The same year the honorary doctorate was awarded cause by the University College of London.

Adds la Nacion of Buenos Aires, one of the main achievements of Ahtisaari, together with its founding, Crisis Management Initiative (CMI), created in 2000, was completed with the civil war in Indonesia’s Aceh province, in 2005. In addition, since the 1970s he served a prominent role in the independence of Namibia from South Africa in 1990. Namibia is the most important work, because it took so much time, said Ahtisaari. Between 2005 and 2007, he fulfilled a mission as Special Envoy of the United Nations (UN) to Kosovo, but did not achieve a negotiated solution. Kosovo, inhabited by an Albanian majority unilaterally proclaimed independence from Serbia last February.

In the process of negotiation of the status of Kosovo, former Finnish President (1994-2000) had an outstanding work. Last year, it presented to the UN Security Council a plan that bears his name, which argues that Kosovo’s independence is the only viable option to solve the conflict. Ahtisaari had already acted in that conflict in 1999, when Serbs attacked the region, and acted as an intermediary to bring an end to the bombings of NATO against Slobodan Milosevic’s Yugoslavia. On the other hand, in 2000, Ahtisaari oversaw the disarmament of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and last year hosted talks between Sunni and Shiite Iraqis. The Secretary general of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, called Ahtisaari’s champion of the principles and ideals. The President of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu, also highlighted their work for peace. I am very satisfied with the decision of the Nobel Committee. And also happy. It is a lifetime award. The most important of my missions was of course the independence of Namibia. 13 Years I was busy with that process. Aceh and Kosovo were also very important, he added. The former President of Finland has announced that it will allocate some of the money to finance his Crisis Management Initiative Institute.
